Unit Name: Wood Carving

Description: This is a 100% coursework unit. The course offers an in-depth study of knowledge and the acquisition of fine motor skills in carving and introduces students to the art of carving three dimensional forms. Carving is an integral part of tradition and culture in Fiji and the Pacific and it is important that students acquire these skills so that they are able to teach them confidently. The course also focuses on the study of wood and its use as one of the most useful and versatile of all natural materials, having varieties and also exposing students to safely work with different tools appropriate for this type of work. The students will be expected to integrate their cultural understanding of this craft into their work. Topics covered will include theoretical and practical components in identifying the different grades of wood and the varieties suitable for carving.
