Unit Name: Financial Management and Health Economics

Description: This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the concepts in financial and management accounting. Students will be able to appreciate these concepts and be able to analyse and interpret these financial and management concepts in the context of the health system. The course also equips students with the knowledge of health economics, its fundamental concepts and the application to health systems and health managers.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Explain management accounting theories and concepts in healthcare management. 2. Distinguish and interpret financial accounting statements. 3. Examine the different financial controls and reporting systems. 4. Explain the concepts and theory of health economics. 5. Distinguish the different forms of health economic evaluation. 6. Distinguish between the principal ways of funding health services and paying healthcare providers. 7. Analyse evidence on the efficiency and equity implications of health financing reforms in low and middle income countries.
