Unit Name: Introduction to Health Services Management

Description: Health Services management is the administrative machinery for planning, delivery and monitoring health care provided by health professionals and their support staff. This may range from running a small primary care centre to organizing a large hospital or being responsible for running the health needs of a region or a nation. Managers should manage in such a manner that would bring about more productive and satisfied workers. Work must be interesting and stimulating after all regular pays and efficient work condition does not always do the trick. HSM 502 is an introductory course that allows health service managers who are administrators with special training and skills in managing health care. Sometimes they are doctors, nurses or other health professionals requiring the need to be professionally trained.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Define and explain the concept of health services management including managerial functions, roles and skills and also highlighting the role of health teams in community work. 2, Illustrate leadership and organization of a health team. 3. Outline the controlling function of management and assessment of health activities. 4. Illustrate the management of resources in health care including time, space, money, drugs, paperwork and equipment. 5. Demonstrate planning and implementation in health care management. 6. Demonstrate evaluation of health activities. 7. Outline the current challenges in management of health care services.
