Unit Name: Motivational Interviewing in Health Care

Description: HPM805 is designed to provide students with a strong theoretical foundation in motivational interviewing as well as the practical skills needed to implement this behavioural intervention in health care settings. In this course, students learn the theory behind behaviour change counselling as well as the skills involved in motivational interviewing. Skills are strengthened through a series of role-play and practicum experiences. Clinical research findings and video demonstrations are incorporated into the lessons.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Demonstrate an understanding of theoretical foundation of motivational interviewing, including key psychological theories and therapeutic approaches. 2. Discuss and utilize empirical findings from the motivational interviewing research literature. 3. Conceptualize health behaviour counselling interactions using the four specified processes of motivational interviewing. 4. Utilize engagement and directive strategies within the context of work focused on health behaviour change. 5. Apply core MI skills as well as advanced MI techniques during work involving health behaviour change.
