Unit Name: Applied Health Psychology

Description: HPM705 will begin with a revisit of the Biopsychosocial model to health. The course will examine the various research methods in health psychology; the predictors of health behaviors’ and changing health beliefs and behaviors’ at the inter and intra personal levels, psychoneuroimmunology, working with survivors of trauma using communications-behaviour change model, motivational interviewing and solution focused therapy, and lastly, an exploration of professional issues related to ethical practice.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Explain the predictors of health behaviors’ and, the various approaches to behaviour change. 2. Demonstrate the impact of psychoneuroimmunology on individual health. 3. Apply the communications-behaviour change model, motivational interviewing and solution focused therapy approach when working with survivors of trauma. 4. Identify stress and other health compromising behaviors’ in one-self and be able to engage in self-care and wellbeing activities. 5. To analysis the physiological, psychological and behavioural effects of trauma on individuals, families, and the wider community 6. To apply different approaches related to self-care and wellbeing in the health profession and in specific issues 7. Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills (group work & presentations).
