Unit Name: Quarrying Technology and Equipment

Description: This Unit will introduce the student to quarrying technology and equipment currently in use in Fiji by way of a case study of Nasinu Quarry. It will cover aspects of geophysical techniques for resources mapping and resource estimation, overburden calculation and removal, consideration of needs for blasting and a demonstration of where blasting is necessary. Equipment for removal of material, including dewatering, screening, crushing and washing and conveyor systems and settlement ponds will be introduced. The operations of major business houses in Fiji will be introduced that rely on crushed rock, sand and gravel for their operations.
