Unit Name: Pests and Diseases of Agroforestry and Biosecurity

Description: This course allows students to learn the science of forest entomology. Definition of entomology and characteristics of phylum Arthropoda. Definition of Insect and insect Orders of agricultural importance. Introduction to Public Forestry and Forest Health. Definition and principles of Insect Pest Management. Insect pests of forest nursery: List of insect pests of forest nursery and their types, management of insect pests of forest nursery. Insect pests of plantations: Bark beetles: Types of bark beetles causing harm to wood products and their biology, detection and their management strategy. Ambrosia beetles: Types of ambrosia beetles causing harm to wood products and their biology, detection and their management strategy. Wood and wood product insects and their management: Borers of living trees, weakened trees, dry and seasoned trees and wood products and their management. Termites and their management:Termites classification, types of termites, biology, mode of attack, destructive capabilities and management. Defoliators: Classification, types of defoliators causing harm to forest trees, biology, mode of attack, destructive capabilities and management. Marine Borers: Classification, types of marine borers, mode of attack, destructive capabilities and management. Non insect pests of forest and their management: Types of non insect pests, mode of damage and their management. Nematode pests of forest: List of nematode pests of forest plants, their symptoms of damage, destructive capabilities and their management. Phytophagus mite pest in forest: List of phytophagus mite pest of forest plants, symptoms of damage, destructive capabilities and their management. Insect control methods. Natural insect control. Applied control - preventive and curetive methods.
