Unit Name: Ecology and Environmental Health

Description: This study is the foundation course for ecology and health and the focus of the course will be on the ecological disturbance of an ecosystem with particular reference to chemical, physical and biological effects that may have an impact on the environment & human health. Students will be introduced to the literature concerning the form and function of aquatic & terrestrial environments. Content will be oriented during the semester by a series of group discussions relating to ecological principles and experimental design techniques to the study of ecosystems. The use of relevant methods of statistical analysis to aid in the interpretation of data generated from ecological studies will also be covered. In addition, students will be encouraged to increase their awareness and to have a balanced perspective on environmental health issues.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Explain the Science of Ecology. 2. Discuss the complexity of an ecosystem. 3. Discuss ecosystem services. 4. Discuss ecology ethics and literacy. 5. Discuss the subfields of ecology. 6. Explain systems thinking, ecological approaches and the ethics for Environmental Health. 7. Practicum: Execute Environmental Health Ecologic field assessments with ethics considerations.
