Unit Name: Energy, Air Pollution and Health

Description: The course will introduce students to energy sources and uses and the polluting effects it has on our biosphere and our health.

Learning Target Outcomes: After completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the environmental and biogeochemical cycles in different ecosystems. 2. Explain both natural and man-made energy sources including nuclear reactors and their impacts on health and the environment 3. Critically review important air pollutants, including noise and radiation and their effects on human health, climate and the environment 4. Assess health and environment protection policy and strategies at national, regional and international scales eg. Legislations, Global protocols, Conventions and agreements that address specific air pollutants 5. Critically appraise some technologies and pollution prevention guidelines currently designed by developed countries to minimize air pollution 6. Carry out desktop and field rapid assessment survey for the purpose of identifying air pollution sources and climate change impacts in a designated area. 7. Design communication strategies for dissemination of findings to stakeholders observing ethical protocols
