Unit Code: EVH617

Unit Name: Climate change, mitigation and adaptation

Description: Climate change is an existential threat to our planet and all of us living on it. It is a wicked socio-political problem globally that will cause displacement of millions in communities while threating many more millions of communities including humans and biodiversity. Environmental things we are used to such as weather are already chageing drastically. Climate change in its fullest onset is in itself a slow-developing disaster (changing things such as disease vector distributions) but in the meantime will cause many acute disasters such as cyclones and increase in atmospheric heat. Environmental Health Practitioners play a crucial role in preparing us to maintain our world to be still liveable and manageable. EHPs play big LOCAL parts in climate change mitigation (measures to reduce what causes or contributes to climate change) and adaptation (measures taken to address the impacts of climate change). This course is designed to provide you with the EHP competencies to be involved in Climate Change work.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss Environment and Health Sciences of Climate Change 2. Critique the upstream drivers and pressures that led us to climate change 3. Explain measuring climate change - gathering the evidence 4. Discuss iterative risks and impact in climate change management 5. Discuss interventions based on mitigation and adaptation and Environmental Health co-benefits 6. Discuss international, regional and local collective strategies, agreements and frameworks
