Unit Name: Solid Waste Management

Description: The course introduces students to waste management – from generation of waste, storage, collection and their ultimate treatment and disposal as practiced by developed countries and methods that are appropriate for PICs.

Learning Target Outcomes: After completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Explain problems and elements of solid waste management & zero waste (3R) concept 2. Conduct a waste characterization survey of a designated area observing ethical protocols 3. Explain processes of a sanitary landfill and composting systems 4. Describe technologies available for waste management and those appropriate for PICs 5. Explain policies and strategic approaches to solid waste management 6. Classify solid waste and their generation, and their sources and treatment 7. Conduct a rapid assessment survey and communicate findings to stakeholders
