Unit Name: Solid Waste Management
Description: The course introduces students to solid waste management systems – from generation of waste, storage, collection, treatment and disposal. The basics are the same whether this is done in a sophisticated way by developed countries or with methods more appropriate for PICs. We will address municipal as well as health care solid waste is managed, as well as how these wate types are managed in rural settings and small islands.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Explain solid wastes as environmental hazards, where it comes from, and why it must be managed properly. 2. Classify solid waste including sources. 3. Explain generic waste management methods across all settings. 4. Discuss health-care wastes, hazardous waste, and e-waste management methods appropriate for all settings. 5. Discuss waste management as service components of Environmental Health Services in PIC. 6. Practicum: Execute appropriate waste surveys, analyze and communicate findings and solutions.
