Unit Name: Occupational Health & Safety

Description: Occupational Health is essentially preventive medicine and it’s aim as endorsed by a joint ILO/WHO Committee is to: Promote maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations. Prevention :among workers of departures from health caused by their working conditions Protection: of workers in their employment from risks resulting from factors adverse to health i.e. “the adaptation of work to man and each man to his job” The Course is designed to involve active participation both in individual and group learning through discussions, presentations and field visits. The group will also be challenged to prepare a health promotion package under the banner of “Health promoting workplace”.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Explain the different types of exposures in the workplace and environment and able to recall terminologies used in OHS. 2. Identify occupational diseases and routes of exposure in the working environment 3. Conduct an occupational hygiene inspection and determine the sources of exposure in the workplace with ethical considerations 4. Analyse control measures in the workplace to limit and remove hazards in the workplace 5. Justify recommendations on how to create a healthy work environment that supports and protects workers health 6. Prepare risk communication strategy for workers health and safety
