Unit Name: Ecology & Health

Description: This study is the foundation course for ecology and health and the focus of the course will be on the ecological disturbance of an ecosystem with particular reference to chemical, physical and biological effects that may have an impact on the environment & human health. Students will be introduced to the literature concerning the form and function of aquatic & terrestrial environments. Content will be oriented during the semester by a series of group discussions relating to ecological principles and experimental design techniques to the study of ecosystems. The use of relevant methods of statistical analysis to aid in the interpretation of data generated from ecological studies will also be covered. In addition, Students will be encouraged to increase their awareness and to have a balanced perspective on environmental health issues.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Describe physical, chemical and biological components of an ecosystem. 2. Explain how terrestrial & aquatic ecosystems operate and how it affects man and environment. 3. Relate basic concepts involved in ecosystem dynamics to terrestrial & aquatic environments 4. Demonstrate implications of developments on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. 5. Discuss the importance of sustainable development and biodiversity. 6. Explain how climate change affects an ecology and its impacts on human health 7. Examine the impacts of ecological disturbances to human health.
