Unit Name: Ridge to Reef Ecosystem Restoration and Management of Natural Resources
Description: Understanding of the geomorphology, ecosystems and resources associated with coastal environments; Critical assessment of the issues associated with resource allocation and use and the range of techniques utilized in coastal zone management.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Critically discuss the impact of historic, current and future variations in sea level on the management of coastal environments. 2. Critically evaluate the ways in which human activity may alter geomorphological processes. 3. Evaluate the management of watershed, biodiversity and species within the context of the South Pacific. 4. Discuss the issues surrounding the allocation and use of ridge to reef resources. 5. Critically evaluate the techniques for the management of a range of ridge to reef resources. 6. Critically evaluate the ways in which coastal/marine and ridge resources, and environments, can be managed for the purpose of conservation and preservation under the RAMSAR convention and through government initiatives.
