Unit Name: Qualitative Research Methods
Description: This course introduces students to qualitative research methods in public health. It provides an understanding of epistemology, research design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Students will gain hands-on experience in conducting in-depth interviews, focus groups, and observational research, coding qualitative data using NVivo software, and thematic analysis. The course will also cover mixed methods research, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches. Throughout the course, students will complete readings, assignments, and an applied research project to develop competency in qualitative methods.
Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1: Differentiate between qualitative research designs, including grounded theory, ethnography, narrative research, phenomenology, and case studies. 2: Formulate qualitative research questions and design a qualitative or mixed-methodsstudy. 3: Conduct interviews, focus groups, and participant observations. . 4: Apply qualitative data collection techniques, including probing and active listening. 5: Integrate qualitative research with mixed methods approaches, analyzing qualitative data using coding, thematic analysis, and software tools, and presenting findings effectively in both written and oral formats.
