Unit Name: Introduction to Health Information Systems

Description: This course provides an overview of health information systems and its uses in different settings, e.g. for public health surveillance (e.g. CD, NCD, disease registers), hospital in-patients and out-patients, pathology laboratories, dispensaries, community and primary health care services, environmental health.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Discuss the overview of health information systems and their uses across different levels of the health system. 2. Explain the importance of data quality (and describe the key components and quality standards of a HIS) in healthcare systems and the strengths and limitations of the available data sources. 3. Explain the role of public health surveillance systems and evaluate the performance criteria of a well-functioning HIS in the pacific. 4. Analyse and interpret HIS data and discuss communication, dissemination and uses of health information products.
