Unit Code: EPI715

Unit Name: Health Research Proposal Development

Description: This course introduces undergraduate students to the process of developing a research study, from identifying a health problem to preparing a full research proposal. Students will learn to formulate research questions, conduct a basic literature review, select appropriate study designs and methods, and apply foundational data analysis approaches. Emphasis is placed on practical application of concepts through the development of an individual research proposal. The course assumes prior exposure to basic research design and data analysis. It is delivered in a blended format, combining weekly face-to-face lectures with online tutorials and activities via the FNU Moodle platform. Students are expected to actively participate in weekly activities and maintain at least 80% attendance. Continuous assessment accounts for 60% of the final grade, while the final 40% is based on the submission and oral presentation of a complete research proposal.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe health research processes, research philosophies and identify a health problem that informs the formulation of a research question and the selection of appropriate methodology. 2. Conduct a basic literature review on a health issue and summarize the key findings relevant to the research question. 3. Select appropriate study designs and basic research methods for addressing a research question in a local health context and explain simple techniques for data collection, analysis, and interpretation. 4. Prepare, write, and present a basic research proposal that demonstrates knowledge of health research principles and addresses a specific health-related issue.
