Unit Name: Health Information Systems, Surveillance and Outbreak Management

Description: EPI711 is conducted over a single semester and is administered both online and face-to-face. The course is divided into three modules. It begins by introducing health information systems and its role in supporting public health surveillance. The second module focuses on the evaluation of surveillance systems, covering their purpose, importance, criteria, attributes, and evaluation methods. The third module explores outbreak investigation and management, including the steps involved in conducting an outbreak investigation and the importance of effective communication in outbreak response. The course concludes with practical training on how to develop a situation report. Assessment activities will include short tests and assignments.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1: Describe health information systems and its components (resources, data types andindicators, data sources, data management and analysis, information products, data dissemination and use). 2: Discuss, assess and appraise public health surveillance systems in the Pacific. 3: Explore the steps involved in the investigation and management of disease outbreaks. 4: Determine appropriate management, response, control and risk communication of a disease outbreak.
