Unit Name: Applied Entomology

Description: This course allows students to be able to know the definition of pest and type of insect pests. Introduction to methods of insect control, integrated pest management, concept of economic damage, Economic injury level, Economic threshold level, plant protection equipment: sprayers and dusters and their maintenance. Introduction to common insecticides and their formulation. Preparation of pesticide sprays. Safety measures: Insecticide labels and their interpretation, precautions in handling pesticides and its applications, waiting period. Type of insect pests. Common names, scientific names, distribution, host plant, life cycle of some important insect pests of rice, maize, sugarcane, sesamum, ground nut, pigeon pea, french bean, cowpea, taro, cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, potatoes, vegetables: Chinese cabbage, english cabbage, cauliflower, radish, lettuce, cucurbits: watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber, bottle gourd and fruit crops: jackfruit, breadfruit, citrus, mango, guavas, papaya, bananas, pineapple and chestnut. Survey and surveillance, sampling of pests and estimation of damage.
