Unit Name: Basic Agricultural Biology

Description: This course allows students to be able to know the general introduction of living organisms, their classification up to phyla, phyla of agricultural importance and their classification up to class. Distribution, life cycle and economic importance of selected agriculturally important flora and fauna of Fiji. Definition of pest, pest organisms, causes of pest outbreaks. Categories of pest and their general life cycle. Ecosystems and pest organisms. Food chain and food web. Integrated pest management, EIL, ETL, economic damage, damage boundary. Invasive species. Bio-security, Societal and environmental limitations and conservation of biodiversity, natural enemies of insect pests, apiculture, sericulture and other beneficial insect fauna.
