Unit Name: Emergency Medicine II

Description: The College aims to further educate doctors who have graduated with Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine so that by graduation at a Masters level they should possess the following attributes: • Be a clinical specialist in the programme of study which will enable the graduate to practice as a consultant in the relevant specialty in the Pacific Island countries • Have basic management knowledge and skills to prepare them to be in charge of a department • Be able to research pertinent subjects relevant to their day-to-day activities • Be able to practice medicine based on current evidence • Be knowledgeable of the public health issues important to the practice of medicine particularly in their specialty area in the Pacific Island countries.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate at a moderately advanced level, the knowledge and skills in critical care and resuscitation in the emergency department. 2. Demonstrate expert skills in history taking and clinical examination and moderately advanced skills in important life-saving procedures in the emergency department. 3. Demonstrate moderately advanced concepts in managing emergency services. 4. Demonstrate at a moderately advanced level, the knowledge and skill in the assessment and management of important surgical emergencies. 5. Demonstrate at a moderately advanced level, the knowledge and skill in the assessment and management of important medical emergencies. 6. Demonstrate at a moderately advanced level, the knowledge and skill in the assessment and management of important obstetric and gynaecological emergencies. 7. Demonstrate at a moderately advanced level, the knowledge and skill in the assessment and management of important paediatric emergencies. 8. Demonstrate at a moderately advanced level, the knowledge and skill in the assessment and management of important behavioural and psychiatric emergencies.
