Unit Code: EEB851

Unit Name: Industrial Automation

Description: This is a unit intended for those specializing in power, control and instrumentation technology and systems, with particular emphasis on developing the understanding and skills required for the analysis, testing, installation and maintenance of programmable logic controller (PLC) equipment. This is also for larger systems control and monitoring to even extra-large capacity. SCADA is introduced as the data acquisition, monitoring and control system for local and extended vicinities.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Identify and explain the main design characteristics, internal architecture, operating principles and applications of programmable logic controllers and SCADA systems. (WA2) 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and languages used in typical PLC programs. (WA2) 3. Carry out the essential set-up, configuration and installation of typical PLC and SCADA systems and interface with appropriate input/output devices for data acquisition and manipulation. (WA2) 4. Design, test, analyse, document and present a typical PLC and SCADA system for data acquisition, monitoring and control of industrial processes. (WA3, WA5, WA10) 5. Identify environmental and safety issues with PLC and SCADA systems, and be able to apply methods for fault diagnosis, testing and debugging. (WA2, WA6)
