Unit Name: Education & Development in the Small Island States of the Pacific

Description: Changes in society, innovations in science and technology, and new skill requirements continue to threaten social and cultural values, knowledge systems and practices. These present challenges to the Pacific island countries in policy design and investments to shape and strengthen education systems, drive development agenda while reflecting global and national values. The education system is often then called to provide the necessary knowledge, skills and values as well as attributes that can instill critical attitudes, flexibility and creativity to sustain and drive national development. The course is intended to provide students with conceptual and analytical skills with which to address the trajectory of education in the development of the Pacific is region. Emphasis will be on Fiji within the broader context of globalization, effort at sustainable development, and the evident threat of climate change. The course utilizes a combination of selected philosophical and theoretical works in education and the prevailing discourse on development. It will then critically explore their bearings on selected national development issues and the role of education in providing viable solutions to diversity and social inclusion and national identity.
