Unit Name: Early Intervention for Young Children with Disabilities

Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to early intervention services for children birth-age 8 and their families in Fiji. The history of the disability rights movement in Fiji and the development of national Fijian policy and programs for adults and children with disabilities will be explored with a focus on implications for early intervention. Students will understand how disabilities are diagnosed and will become familiar with disabilities categories and recommendations for inclusion for children with sensory, physical, health, intellectual, communication, learning, social, emotional, and behavioral impairments. Students will become comfortable with intervention tools such as the IEP (Individualized Education Programme) used in inclusive and early intervention settings in Fiji.
