Unit Name: Professional Practice

Description: Practicum is seen as the central component of the primary teacher training program. The course aims to develop attributes and competencies in each student teacher which include observation skills, classroom teaching skills and critical reflection skills. This Unit also expects the student teachers to put into practice knowledge and skills learnt from the content courses as well as the Education courses in teaching lower primary. The first part of this unit will introduce students to basic planning, teaching, class management and student assessment techniques Here, students will be able to apply key principles of curriculum design to plan, implement and evaluate lessons at the micro level. This will involve a synthesis of the elements of lesson planning: e.g. aims and objectives, introduction, concept development and selection of resources and evaluation. This will enable students to develop appropriate teaching practices in different year levels. The second part of the course will provide first hand experience of teaching in a real classroom situation where the trainee will be expected to translate knowledge into instructional discourse.
