Unit Name: Qualitative Research Methodology
Description: In this course students will be introduced to qualitative research methodology and methods. They will learn about the philosophical and epistemological ideas associated with qualitative research. Students will also learn about qualitative approaches in research endeavours such as instruments for data collection. This course will equip students with the ability to plan and conduct research using qualitative research methods. In this regard, the course will focus on the steps for data collection and how to prepare qualitative data for analysis. In addition, students will gain knowledge and skills about approaches to research in indigenous communities. Students will be provided with opportunities to learn how to formulate qualitative research questions and when to use qualitative methods such as observation, focus groups and interviewing. Besides discussing the most significant concepts in qualitative research, the course will also discuss aspects that constitutes rigor and quality in qualitative research. The advantages and limitations of qualitative research will also be covered in this course.
