Unit Code: DRE652

Unit Name: Energy, Audit, Security, Policy and Planning

Description: Energy is one of the major inputs for the economic development of any country. The global need for energy is increasing on average by about 1.5% every year. We need to have a relevant strategy for adjusting and optimizing energy, using systems and procedures so as to reduce energy requirements per unit of output while holding constant or reducing the total costs of producing the output from these systems. In addition to this energy situation in any country is governed by its energy security and policies, hence this course will introduce the relevant policies regarding the energy situation in Fiji and Pacific Island Countries (PICs).

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Identify and analyse well-defined engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using codified methods of analysis specific to their field of activity. 2. Conduct investigations of well-defined problems; locate and search relevant codes and catalogues, conduct standard tests and measurements. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to engineering technician practice and solutions to well-defined engineering problems. 4. Understand and evaluate the sustainability and impact of engineering technician work in the solution of well-defined engineering problems in societal and environmental contexts. 5. Function effectively as an individual, and as a member of diverse technical teams. 6. Communicate effectively on well-defined engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, by comprehending the work of others, documenting their own work, and giving and receiving clear instructions. 7. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member or leader in a technical team and to manage projects in multidisciplinary environments (DA11)
