Unit Name: Business Management Techniques for Engineers

Description: This unit is intended to give technicians an appreciation of business organizations and the application of standard costing techniques, as well as an insight into the key functions underpinning financial planning and control. It also aims to expand technicians’ knowledge of managerial and supervisory techniques by introducing and applying the fundamental concepts of project planning and scheduling.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Identify information requirements and obtains information from the relevant industry literature. 2. Demonstrates an understanding of the moral responsibilities of an engineering technician including the need to self-manage in an orderly and ethical manner, to balance the wider public interest with the interests of employers and clients, and to uphold standards in the engineering profession. 3. Function effectively as an individual, and as a member in diverse technical teams. 4. Comprehends how legislative, regulatory, contract law, other common law and professional obligations apply and manages own activities to comply. 5. Selects and apply basic project management tools to the planning and execution of practical project work. 6. Identifies an appropriate form of contract for delivery of work by contractors. 7. Identifies relevant practical methods for managing quality, reliability and engineering risk. 8. Applies established methods for costing engineering work. 9. Applies independent learning practices.
