Unit Name: Nutritional Epidemiology and Intervention

Description: The course will provide an introduction to the methodological issues involved in the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of studies investigating the relationship between nutritional status, diet and disease. The impact of methodological issues and of the type of study design, on interpretation and conclusions from research in nutrition epidemiology will be emphasized. In addition the course will examine behavioural change theories and conceptual models for successful intervention in the community.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, student will be able to: 1. Examine the role of Epidemiology in nutritional studies. 2. Critically appraise nutritional interventions conducted in the Pacific. 3. Analyse nutritional assessment tool(s) for use with different study designs in nutritional epidemiology and methodological issues of particular importance to each. 4. Design community surveys using both Quantitative and Qualitative research methodologies. 5. Critically evaluate scientific literature to form evidence based dietary recommendation. 6. Utilise global, regional and national indicators for nutrition progress using nutritional monitoring and surveillance.
