Unit Name: Introduction to Dietetic Practice
Description: This course is designed to provide students with the clinical dietetic care of individuals who are not well in the hospital. The nutrition assessment concepts and approaches will be covered in-depth within this course. The importance of the health care team initiative will be explored and the importance of communicating nutrition related information to patients. The course will also introduce students to on-site attachment in the clinical setting and to observe and apply the nutritional assessment techniques.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1: Describe the contributing factors to diet related problems in children and adults in the Pacific Island Countries (PIC) 2: Relate the holistic approach to patient care to the role of the dietitian 3: Explain the nutrition care process (NCP) utilised in the nutritional management of individuals in the context of various diseases and conditions 4: Apply appropriate nutritional assessment techniques of individuals in clinical settings in an ethical and professional manner 5: Discuss the different modes of feeding 6: Interpret nutrition assessment data to determine nutritional status of individuals
