Unit Name: Nutrition and Obesity
Description: This course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge of physical activity and food intake. There is an increase rate of overweight and obesity in most PICs and it is important to understand the link in food intake and energy expenditure. Balancing energy intake and expenditure for the control and maintenance of body weight is a strategy that needs to be implemented. Overweight and obesity has been identified as a risk factor to morbidity and mortality among individual thus needs to be addressed.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Discuss the risk factors to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). 2. Interpret the Pacific physical activity guideline. 3. Relate the role of nutrition and physical activity in promoting healthy weight. 4. Discuss lifestyle behaviour modification strategies and ethical values to enhance behaviour change. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of nutritional assessment using anthropometric measurements and other screening tools. 6. Apply physical activity and dietary guidelines to organize a program for any target community.
