Unit Name: Oral Surgery

Description: The major portion of the Semester 2, it is dedicated to Component 4 - Oral Surgery where the trainee is expected to obtain hands-on experience in the management of patients with oral surgical problems relevant to the course objectives. Block teaching week by a visiting Oral Medicine Specialist will include a student seminar presentation session together with masters students. Collaborative patient management with allied disciplines such as orthodontics and prosthetic dentistry is also included. This programme introduces e - learning methods using MOODLE server at elearn.fnu.ac.fj.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Discuss the principles of diagnosis and management of disease conditions of mouth, jaws, orofacial region and other related structures. 2. Discuss the principles of diagnosis and management of oro-facial trauma. 3. Discuss the principles of diagnosis and management of cysts, benign tumours, oral potentially malignant diseases (OPMD) and malignant tumours involving the oro-facial region. 4. Discuss the role of the dentist in the interdisciplinary care for malocclusion, impacted teeth and cleft lip and palate and dental implants. 5. Practice non-surgical management of conditions including temporo-mandibular joint disorders, oro- facial pain and oro-mucosal diseases. 6. Practice minor to moderate oral surgical procedures under local or general anaesthesia for odontogenic infections, developmental anomalies (secondary alveolar bone grafting in cleft palate), benign conditions (jaw cysts, OPMD, benign tumours) and malignant conditions (biopsy procedures, excision of small oral cancer lesions and repair with local flaps). 7. Practice prescribed procedures for the management of oro-facial trauma (open reduction and internal fixation). 8. Develop skills in scientific writing for documentation of clinical case reports. 9. Develop skills in scientific writing for documentation of clinical case reports.
