Unit Name: General Medicine in Oral Surgery

Description: For Component 1-3 the trainee is expected to take part as observers in the clinical management of patients during these appointments and to obtain a basic understanding of management of patients with systemic disease and relate these to the practice oral surgery.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Practice methods of history taking, general and system based examination, record findings and analysis in order to work out problems and decide on a differential diagnosis in patients waiting for oral surgical care. 2. Interpret relevant ECG, CXR and other imaging investigations with a view to: diagnose, assess response to treatment and follow up. 3. Interpret relevant biochemical, haematological and serological investigations with a view to: diagnose, assess response to treatment and follow up. 4. Logically analyse and associate history, examination findings and results of investigations to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. 5. Explain the rationale of decision making for appropriate principles of management and therapy. 6. Evaluate the underlying pathophysiology, principles of management and implications to oral health in relevant diseases of the cardiovascular system. 7. Evaluate the underlying pathophysiology, principles of management and implications to oral health in relevant diseases of the haematological system. 8. Evaluate the underlying pathophysiology, principles of management and implications to oral health in relevant diseases of the pulmonary system. 9. Evaluate the underlying pathophysiology, principles of management and implications to oral health in relevant diseases of the hepatic system. 10. Evaluate the underlying pathophysiology, principles of management and implications to oral health in relevant diseases of the neurological system. 11. Evaluate the underlying pathophysiology, principles of management and implications to oral health in relevant diseases of the renal system. 12. Evaluate the underlying pathophysiology, principles of management and implications to oral health in relevant diseases of the endocrine system. 13. Utilize the burden and risk factors of common non-communicable disease: hypertension indicating their implications to patients awaiting oral surgical care. 14. Utilize the burden and risk factors of common non-communicable disease: diabetes mellitus indicating their implications to patients awaiting oral surgical care. 15. Utilize the burden and risk factors of common non-communicable disease: coronary heart disease indicating their implications to patients awaiting oral surgical care. 16. Apply principles of management of common medical emergencies.
