Unit Name: Oral Surgery

Description: This course component is designed to provide students with standard clinical experience in office surgical procedures and problems associated therewith and guide towards the clinical application of Oral Surgery, where actual hands-on surgery will be performed by the student. Year 5 students would have had the necessary foundation knowledge of the basic sciences and necessary Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology Oral Surgical knowledge of relevant Oral disease processes which are reinforced in the discussion of clinical scenarios and observation of patient cases requiring surgical management. Students are encouraged to expand their competency development not only in the development of clinical skills, but also in acquiring attitudinal attributes of empathy, sensitivity to patient feelings and situations, and application to a variety of settings. The Hospital work experience will also be gained by student participation with the oral surgery resident or house officers at the CWMH Dental Department in the evaluation for hospitalization and admission process, physical exam and writing of orders. Students will be asked to observe or assist with the more complicated procedures. With this exposure the student will be able to recognize the clinical and surgical indication for appropriate patient referral. The hospital aspect of the rotation allows students to participate in the management of patients with common oral surgical diseases including: odontogenic infections, oro-facial trauma, developmental anomalies, neoplasia and oral medicine cases. They would also get exposed to dento-alveolar and major oral surgical procedures performed by Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and trained dentists under general anaesthesia and develop skills in minor oral surgical procedures such as surgical removal of impacted teeth and biopsy/flap procedures performed under local anaesthesia.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Practice principles of ethics and professionalism in rendering optimum and proficient oral surgical care for common oral conditions in Hospital Clinical practice. 2. Describe the common congenital and development conditions involving the oro-facial region and the role of the dental practitioner in the management of cleft lip and palate. 3. Describe the principles of management of inflammatory, infective, obstructive and traumatic conditions involving the oral cavity. 4. Describe the principles of management of benign and malignant neoplasms involving the oral cavity. 5. Describe peri-operative management of a patient with medical conditions awaiting oral surgical procedure. 6. Explain the principles and demonstrate dento-alveolar surgery procedures under Local Anaesthesia. 7. Discuss management of common oro-facial infections in relation to dento-alveolar abscess, facial cellulitis and life threatening complications. 8. Describe principles of management of mandibular and maxillary fractures in relation to methods of reduction, fixation, immobilization and rehabilitation and demonstrate closed reduction of mandibular fractures under local anaesthesia. 9. Describe principles of management of jaw cysts and tumours. 10. Describe the indications and techniques of intra and extra oral radiography and other imaging method in the assessment and interpretation of pathology of the jaws and related structures. 11. Apply the principles and concepts of minor oral surgery in performing procedures for prescribed intra-oral disease conditions.
