Unit Code: DNT757

Unit Name: Oral Medicine, Pathology & Surgery

Description: This course is designed to provide students with knowledge of pathologic disorders and diseases of the head and neck and is of particular relevance and importance to practice of the future oral health practitioner. Oral pathology covers the epidemiology, clinical features, etiology, pathogenesis, investigations and behaviour of oral diseases, and is also closely linked with the surgical management of oral diseases, adjunct investigations such as imaging and clinical therapeutics. Students develop critical thinking skills in clinical reasoning when presented with cases, where they explain mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, rationale and selection of the most appropriate diagnostic tests for confirmation, and modalities of appropriate management or referral. They will also be provided with theoretical knowledge around surgical procedures and problems associated therewith and guide towards the clinical application of Oral Surgery, where actual hands-on surgery will be performed by the student in year 5.Year 4 students would have had the necessary foundation knowledge of the basic sciences and necessary Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology Oral Surgical knowledge of relevant Oral disease processes which are reinforced in this module. There will also be clinical case scenario discussions and observation of patient cases requiring surgical management where this will be further reinforced. Students are encouraged to master the theoretical knowledge in surgical management of minor oral surgery where they will be expected to develop the clinical competencies in year 5.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Explain normal histological features and constituents of different body tissue types and relate these to physiologic functions. 2. Explain tissue structural changes and relate to common oral pathology including pulpal pathology, periodontal pathology, oral pigmentations, hyperplastic lesions and their management. 3. Recognize abnormalities in teeth and common soft tissue developmental defects of the orofacial region, explain epidemiology, clinical, diagnostic and management issues related to developmental abnormalities of enamel and dentine and identify syndromes that may be associated with developmental abnormalities of the orofacial region. 4. Identify common Oral Surgical Diseases/Disorders of the orofacial region, explain the epidemiology, aetiology/pathogenesis, clinical features, investigations, histology and their management. 5. Review knowledge of head and neck anatomy as applied in the management of oral surgical patients. 6. Discuss the systematic method of evaluating a patient with an oral surgical condition and describe and interpret different investigative/diagnostic tools used to obtain and develop a differential diagnosis and confirm definitive diagnosis. 7. Describe and demonstrate the general principles of surgery relevant to oral surgery and common minor oral surgical procedures including flap designs, biopsy, suturing techniques, tooth impactions and OAC. 8. Describe the evaluation of a patient with maxillofacial or mandibular fracture and describe principles of management. 9. Describe the aetiology, clinical presentation and principles of management of life-threatening Orofacial Infections & Demonstrate sound knowledge in the use of pharmocotherapy in the management of common Oral Surgical conditions. 10. Introduce General Anaesthesia in Oral Surgery and discuss the management of medically compromised patients undergoing oral surgery. 11. Describe and demonstrate proper infection control procedures, aseptic techniques and health and safety measures practiced in oral surgery.
