Unit Name: Common Core Skills in Dentistry
Description: The purpose of this course is to provide the art and science of practicing contemporary dentistry involves sequential development of proficiency of common core skills. This course is designed to lay the foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge for students and will provide the relevant experiences towards restoration of biological, microbial, mechanical, aesthetic functions of the dentition. This introductory thematic sequential module will focus on several inter-related disciplines towards development of preclinical and pre-laboratory skills. The inter-related discipline consists of endodontic, prosthodontics, orthodontics and material science.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss the historical background of orthodontics \" 2. Discuss concepts of growth, development of the dentition and craniofacial structures 3. Discuss and demonstrate the key components of orthodontic comprehensive patient assessment 4. Demonstrate basic technical skills required to provide clinical endodontic treatment. 5. Discuss the role of bacteria in pulp and periapical disease and the various ways to reduce microbial flora. 6. Discuss the etio-pathogenesis of pulp, periapical conditions and the associated anatomy of the root canal system. 7. Discuss the basic properties, characteristics, composition, uses, advantages and disadvantages, and classifications of dental materials. 8. Demonstrate skills in clinical and laboratory procedures involved in construction of orthodontic appliances. 9. Demonstrate skills in laboratory procedures involved in construction of complete and partial dentures. 10. Demonstrate the ability to carry out aesthetic and occlusal assessment.
