Unit Name: Periodontics

Description: This one semester course is designed to provide students with sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge and clinical skills to prepare them for gaining competence in independent decision making for preventive advice and therapy within the scope of practice and referral to a specialist for complex cases in the field of Periodontics.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Apply knowledge of anatomy of periodontal tissues with relevance to clinical non-surgical and surgical periodontal procedures. 2. Apply the concept of risk identification and management in monitoring periodontal treatment outcomes. 3. Collate history, clinical findings and relevant radiologic investigations for successful diagnosis and non-surgical management of inflammatory periodontal disease. 4. Analyze the protocol for supportive periodontal treatment along with adjunctive chemical plaque control and therapeutic regimen for host modulation. 5. Describe the concept of Periodontal Medicine based on inter-relationship of focal periodontal disease with potential adverse systemic outcomes. 6. Interpret the prognosis of the case with relevance to tissue response, healing and periodontal disease activity. 6. Analyze the indications for the different therapeutic surgical options for the management of inflammatory periodontal disease. 7. Explain recent advances in periodontal therapy using growth factors, extracellular matrices and biomimetics. 8. Discuss the assessment and indications of implant supported prosthesis as an option in oral rehabilitation. 9. Describe the etiopathogenesis and management of Acute Pericoronitis, Acute periodontal abscess and Necrotizing gingivitis. 10. Describe the etiopathogenesis and management of Trauma from occlusion and Gingival recession.
