Unit Name: Crown & Bridge
Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students a basic understanding of the concepts and skills required for restoring a single broken down tooth with a fixed prosthodontic restoration.This course includes concepts and principles for basic understanding of all theoretical aspects of Fixed Prosthodontics in relation to clinical and laboratory work. Students gain practical experience and performance skills in a variety of crown preparations at the phantom head laboratory, Clinical skills are developed using phantom heads and plastic teeth on which to practice and refine individual crown preparation techniques, with the goal of students being familiar with a range of different crown preparations as well as developing the necessary handpiece control required for the preparation of a crown restoration. Knowledge is developed through a series of lectures relating directly to the clinical activities planned for the session.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the different types of fixed prosthodontic restorations with indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages of different types of restorations. 2. Describe the dental material science of materials used for impressions, fabrication and cementation of fixed prosthodontic restorations. 3. Describe the various steps involved in diagnosis and treatment planning for fixed prosthodontic restorations. 4. Apply the biological, mechanical and aesthetic principles involved in tooth preparation. 5. Describe the principles of occlusion and aesthetics with emphasis on shade, colour and the techniques used in shade selection for patient requiring fixed prosthodontic treatment. 6. Describe the anatomy of TMJ and its relationship to occlusal rehabilitation using fixed prothodontics and the role of articulators. 7. Demonstrate tooth preparation for the fabrication of gold , metal ceramic, all ceramic crown and laboratory steps involved in the fabrication. 8. Describe the techniques used in isolation,soft tissue management and impression making in fixed prosthodontics. 9. Demonstrate the technique used in the fabrication of temporary crowns on prepared teeth with emphasis on cements and cementation procedures. 10. Describe the principles of tooth preparation for inlays,onlays,veneers and bridges with indications and contraindication of use. 11. Describe the indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages of resin bonded fixed partial dentures.
