Unit Name: Endodontics

Description: This course is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills in the dental discipline of Endodontics. Endodontic is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with the morphology, physiology and pathology of the dental pulp and the per radicular tissues. Its study and practice encompass the basic clinical sciences including the biology of the normal pulp, and the aetiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp and the associated periradicular conditions. Endodontic management of a patient must be conducted in the context of a concern for the patient\'s total oral and general health. Students will continue with this discipline as part of Clinical Dentistry in BDS 5 in a more integrated manner for the wholistic treatment of a dental patient.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss the etiopathogenesis of pulp and periapical diseases. 2. Practice comprehensive clinical examination,patient assessment formulating appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan for an endodontic patient. 3. Discuss pain control during and after endodontic treatment and antibiotic use in endodontics. 4. Evaluate endodontic treatment to establish need for retreatment and discuss the endodontic retreatment techniques. 5. Discuss classification and management options for concurrent endodontic and periodontal disease. 6. Explain indications, considerations and general principles of endodontic surgery. 7. Discuss the indications, considerations, materials and steps of internal bleaching procedure. 8. Discuss general principles of dental trauma and tissue response to trauma and their management. 9. Discuss the clinical classifications, management of cracks including conservative pulp therapy. 10. Discuss classification of root resorption including their respective features of diagnosis, management and treatment outcomes.
