Unit Name: Community Dentistry III
Description: This course is designed to provide students with the theory and practical skill of planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of community based dental program or project. The course will require students to work closely and communicate effectively with community leaders and relevant stakeholders from the planing to the completion of the project whereby a report is expected to be submitted together with an oral presentation of the project overview. Students will be expected to collect data from village communities or rural settings at the same time have the oppotunity to experience rural community living style, culture and challenges. This experience hopefully will help students have a better understanding of the factors influencing community health and develop a sense of compassion for the community that they will serve after completing the program.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the socioeconomic factors affecting access to oral health care (SDG 1: No Poverty) 2. Discuss community need assessment in oral health 3. Prepare a plan for an oral health need assessment project 4. Devise a data collection tool for community oral health need assessment 5. Demonstrate leadership through collaboration with community leaders, peers and relevant government departments 6. Conduct community oral health need assessment (data collection) 7. Analyse data and report the result to stakeholders 8. Prepare a preventive plan based on the result of community need assessment 9. Recognize the importance of equitable access to oral health services (SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities) 10. Monitor and evaluate program outcome. 11. Prepare, submit and present the project report to the stakeholders
