Unit Name: Community Dentistry II

Description: The purpose of this course is to provide a understanding of the evolution and history of health promotion. This subject will also provide relevant knowledge necessary to conduct / plan health promotion programs and evaluation based on population needs. It also gives students an opportunity to discuss their experiences around the theories of the health promotion approaches and other health prevention strategies that they have been exposed to in class and in life. Students will also have an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in health planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion program. Moreover, students will be involved in hands on health education and communication strategies development using state of the art facilities and explore other health promotion practices. Social marketing will train students in the application of commercial marketing principles and concepts to change health behaviours or policies, which have emerged as an effective way to promote health, create healthy environments, and affect policies for the good of a population’s health.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the importance of oral health in overall well-being (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being). 2. Gain knowledge of oral hygiene techniques and preventive measures (SDG 4: Quality Education). 3. Develop effective health communication strategies 4. Explain the meaning of determinants of health and its implications to current health promotion approaches 5. Evaluate culturally competent materials and make appropriate choices to provide recommendations for use in health promotion. 6. Apply the most appropriate and effective ways of communicating in oral health promotion 7. Recognize strategies to improve health literacy. 8. Describe the process of behaviour adoption and communication of behavioural impact (COMBI) approach.\" 9. Explain the context, principles, steps and evaluation of social marketing research in dental public health. 10. Describe key steps and types of market research. 11. Appreciate the Ministry of Health\'s role and strategies in prevention of oral diseases. 12. Evaluate methods in advocating community health and ethical dilemmas 13. Explain the importance of emotional intelligence in conflict management.
