Unit Code: DNT608
Unit Name: Basic Science in Oral Health II
Description: The Basic Science courses run for two semesters and cover the basic and general concepts, principles and mechanisms of the disciplines of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Pathology. The problem-based learning strategy is implemented for these courses, where the disciplines are discussed based on problem cases; students generate learning issues that are discussed and self-studied. Concepts of Pharmacology are also given as resource or as learning issues for self-study, depending on the case. The problem cases are designed for relevance to the future oral health practitioner and dentists, following closely the reality of practice. The courses are divided into blocks, each block covering a basic theme or body system. At year 2 level, emphasis is placed on study of various body systems; oral manifestations of systemic diseases/disorders and the implications of various medical conditions to treatment planning in dentistry.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the anatomical boundaries and contents of various fossae and spaces of the head and neck region and the clinical significance of the spread of infection from upper and lower teeth. 2. Describe the anatomy and the physiology of the temperomandibular joint (TMJ) and it\'s relationship with the muscles of mastication, and the occlusion of teeth. 3. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the skeletal muscle tissue of the head and neck region. 4. Describe the anatomy, physiology and embryology of the cardiovascular system including the pathophysiology of common congenital and acquired cardiovascular disorders. 5. Describe the anatomy and physiology of respiratory system including pathophysiology of common respiratory disorders. 6. Describe the anatomy and physiology of digestive system and the role of nutrition in maintaining oral health. 7. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system including the oral and systemic manifestations of various endocrine disorders. 8. Describe the anatomy and physiology of renal system including the oral and systemic manifestations of common renal diseases.
