Unit Name: Periodontics I
Description: This course deals with the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease, factors affecting tissue response to plaque, and the application of measures for the prevention and non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease in both hospital-based and community settings. The course also covers diagnostic parameters of periodontal conditions and their severity, as well as the rationale for the delivery of periodontal therapy and tissue response to treatment. The course is designed to develop student skills in the treatment and prevention of periodontal diseases. The emphasis of this course is on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention of periodontal diseases, and maintenance of periodontal health in both clinical and community settings. This course allows students to appreciate the factors contributing to, and/or modifying, the progression of periodontal conditions.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the clinical and radiographic assessments of a periodontally compromised patient 2. Discuss the strategies for prevention and control of periodontal diseases 3. Discuss the classification of periodontal diseases and conditions 4. Describe the pathogenesis of periodontitis in terms of microbiology, inflammation and immunlogy 5. Explain the risk assessments, prognosis and treatment planning of periodontally compromised patients 6. Describe the rationale for periodontal and maintenace therapies 7. Discuss pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and treatment of gingivitis, periodontitis and necrotizing periodontal disease 8. Explain the associations between periodontitis and diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and preganancy
