Unit Name: Community Dentistry I
Description: The purpose of this course is to provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of the basics of oral health psychology, professionalism & ethics and basic concepts of health promotion. This is intended to prepare students with a foundational knowledge on the aspects of dental public health.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the historical background and development of psychology in relation to health. 2. Describe the different behavioural approaches in psychology to clinical and community settings. 3. Describe the basic developmental patterns across life span. 4. Describe stress and its association with health and illness. 5. Discuss common social and cultural issues and its impact on health care providers and the community. 6. Describe human defensive and coping mechanisms 7. Describe the different health behaviour models and theories. 8. Describe the professional, ethical and legal principles that guides the conduct of a health care provider. 9.Outline the principles and concepts of Primary Health Care and Health Promotion. 10.Outline the application of PHC and health promotion principles in the delivery of oral health service. 11. Identify the opportunities and challenges of promoting oral health in deprived settings. 12. Identify oral health strategies and culturally safe care to high risk individuals or vulnerable groups. 13. Identify the sustainable developmental goals outlined by the United Nations.
