Unit Code: DNT500
Unit Name: Clinical Dentistry I
Description: Component 1: This course is designed to provide the students with a hands-on fully-intensive introduction to all the basic principles, materials and procedures of dental clinical practice, in the controlled environment of the clinical laboratory. First Year students learn the scope of practice of dental assisting which they practice as participant observers in partnership with senior students. Students develop skills in carrying out administrative and clerical duties, assisting at the chair-side, strict implementation of infection control and occupational health and safety measures, assist in the management of emergencies in dental office, preparation and processing of radiographs, minimal non-interventional patient interactions, basic first-aid and maintenance and preparation of dental instruments. Component 2: This course introduces the student to the scientific basis for the use and manipulation of dental materials used in dental practice. Dental materials are described in terms of classification and function, composition, physical and biological properties and the optimal conditions for their maintenance. This highly-technical course is most relevant, as the use of dental materials is important to the dental practitioner, thus its introduction in Year One as a foundation course that is repetitively applied throughout the program.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Component 1 - Semester 1 & Semester 2 discuss the fundamentals of professionalism and ethical behaviour with efficient and safe delivery of dental care to patients. describe the foundational principles of cross-infection and hazardous exposure control protocols. explain the importance of keeping accurate records and the use of universally accepted dental indices for charting and digital health information system. demonstrate dental assisting skills relevant to various clinical settings and situations. identify the various equipment, instruments and materials utilized in various dental procedures. demonstrate knowledge and skills for various procedural tray set-ups. demonstrate the use and care of dental units, suction and other equipment in the clinic. describe the principles of intra-oral radiography. demonstrate procedures related to the use of intra-oral radiographs. DNT500 C1.10 identify the various presentations of medical emergencies in the dental practice and complete basic life support training. DNT500 C1.11 demonstrate aseptic procedures in the dental operating theatre. Component 2 - Semester 2 DNT500 C2.01 describe the properties of dental materials with respect to: physical and chemical structure, mechanical, optical, thermal, electrical, rheological property and importance of basic chemistry. DNT500 C2.02 discuss the biological considerations in the use of dental materials and the biocompatibity of materials used in clinical dentistry. DNT500 C2.03 explain the criteria for assessing dental materials as ideal for use in various clinical conditions. DNT500 C2.04 describe the conditions where the clinical manipulation and composition of materials would affect their overall properties. DNT500 C2.05 discuss the use of dental materials for specific dental applications and conditions. DNT500 C2.06 discuss the properties and uses of the bases and liners, luting cements and dental bonding materials. DNT500 C2.07 describe the chemical composition and properties of restorative and preventive materials. DNT500 C2.08 describe the basic properties and chemical composition of bleaching, endodontic and laboratory materials.
