Unit Name: Introduction to Clinical Dentistry and Dental Assisting

Description: This course is a semester long course designed to provide students with foundational knowledge in clinical dentistry to allow them to be proficient in supporting the dental team in delivery of dental services in diverse clinical settings. The course comprises of online lectures, videos, demonstrations, self-directed learning and workplace attachment. The contents of this course includes dental materials, cross infection control, preventive dentistry, medical emergencies, dental instruments, four and six-handed dentistry, instrument transfer and oral evacuation, dental radiography, speciality areas in dentistry, practice management and administration will be covered in this course.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Explain the role and attributes required of the dental assistant within a dental team. 2. Apply measures and principles of cross infection control and occupational health and safety in the dental setting. 3. Describe dental materials, medicaments and instruments required for delivery of dental services. 4. Perform chairside dental assisting procedures and maintenance of dental records. 5. Explain the basics of professionalism, dental jurisprudence, principles of bioethics and ethical behaviour and decision making 6. Apply the principles of dental practice management as a dental assistant. 7. Explain the role of the dental assistant in the management of common medical emergencies in the dental clinic
