Unit Name: Introduction to Oral Biology and Diseases

Description: The Introduction to Oral Biology and Oral Diseases course runs for one semester and covers the basic anatomy of the head and neck, oral cavity and the human dentition. This course also covers basic concepts of microbiology and a basic understanding of the common oral diseases and systemic conditions relevant to the practice of dentistry.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Define commonly used terms relevant to the practice of dental assisting 2. Describe the gross anatomical landmarks of the head, neck and oral cavity including the basic structure and function of the permanent and deciduous dentition. 3. Describe the normal oral flora including the two main classes of micro-organisms, their modes of transmission and identification of microorganisms associated with common oral diseases. 4. Identify the microorganisms commonly transmitted in a dental setting, their modes of transmission and their associated disease. 5. Explain the basic pathophysiology of common oral diseases such as dental caries and gingival and periodontal disease 6. Describe the common medical conditions and medical emergencies that have an impact on dental management.
