Unit Name: General Ship Knowledge III

Description: This approved course provides students with the knowledge and understanding of ship stability and basic ship construction.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this subject DNS581, the student is expected to: • Evaluate the dynamic forces on the structure of the ship • Compare the functions of major structural components of hull & superstructure. • Rate functions of the structural components ( fittings) and generate knowledge & understanding of rudders & propellers • Distinguish between watertight, non-watertight and oil tight or tank bulkheads, evaluate and appraise the curves of statical stability. • Evaluate use ships stability data from relevant sources and demonstrate an understanding of damage stability requirements for certain vessels. • Demonstrate the basic knowledge and use of a stress tables and access fundamental actions to be taken in the event of partial loss of intact stability.
