Unit Name: Nautical Knowledge I

Description: This course provides the students with a foundation knowledge of shipboard operations and weather observation.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DNS482, the student is expected to: • Illustrate the main dimensions of a ship and the terms • Sketch and explain the deck crane parts, ladders and fittings of a ship • Determine the basic principles of cargo stowage • Demonstrate knowledge & understanding of the importance of safe working practices on board • Specify the different types of weather and understand weather patterns • Demonstrate the importance of ship handling and methods of maneuvering.
