Unit Name: Introduction to Navigation & Chartwork

Description: This module provides students with a foundation in navigation and chartwork. Students will be introduced to navigation terminology and definitions, navigational calculations and the determination of the ship position using celestial and terrestrial bodies, and other navigational aid.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit DNS480 Navigation, the student is expected to: • Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of navigation related geodetic themes such as the shape of the earth, coordinate systems and Nautical charts • Determine compass error for courses and compass bearings • Apply the true course calculation methods, distance and speed between two positions(Chart work exercises) • Illustrate and interprets characteristics of lights and chart abbreviations. • Specify the relationship between hour angle and time • Determine the direction of a position line through an observer and a position through which it passes.
